Jan has worked since 1986 in both preventive and rehabilitative healthcare in the medical setting. A former three-season athlete, herself, she earned her Bachelor of Arts in Physical Education from Columbia College in 1986 and her Master of Science Degree, in Exercise Physiology, from the University of South Carolina, Columbia, in 1992. She has held certifications from the American College of Sports Medicine including certified advanced personal trainer, certified health/fitness Instructor and certification for exercise in older adults.
Jan created The Balance Institute to combine the effectiveness of exercise and massage/bodywork therapies to alleviate pain, to improve muscle abilities, to improve medical conditions, to reduce reliance on medical care, and to assist people in becoming more active and healthy.
Her master thesis studied the effects of exercise on post-menopausal women. She has worked in phases 3 and 4 cardiac rehabilitation, pulmonary rehabilitation exercise, exercise for bone marrow transplant cancer patients, and work injury management, including back surgeries, back pain, and biomechanics during work and lifestyle activities. She also earned her massage therapy certification from the South Carolina Massage Therapy Institute in 1999 and is a member of the South Carolina Governor's Advisory Panel for Massage/Bodywork Therapy.
Jan is a licensed massage and bodywork therapist specializing in John Barnes' Myofascial Release Therapy with Neuromuscular Therapy and Swedish massage techniques. She graduated from the South Carolina Massage Institute in 1999 and holds a Master of Science degree in Exercise Science from the University of South Carolina. Jan has been an instructor of biomechanics at the South Carolina Massage Institute and has over 20 years experience in preventive and rehabilitative healthcare in both hospital and outpatient settings with emphasis in back injury rehabilitation.Specialties:
